The site development for this new French language secondary school provided an excellent opportunity for the establishment of a student campus-based landscape, one in which the active building technologies and systems can be passively related to the site through a series of landscape features and treatments. The design approach is derived from the School Board’s theme, “The Student: A Reflection of our Future”.
Within this theme, a hierarchy of interactive outdoor spaces becomes an extension of the interior building spaces and programs where students come together as a community both socially and academically.
The configuration of the building and landscape present a formal façade to the street, which turns its back to the loading area of the adjacent industrial park. This provides an outdoor landscaped oasis within the arms of the plan, protected from the disturbances of the adjacent traffic arterials. Also attached to the school is a teacher training centre for the Board.
The design of the school also includes numerous sustainable initiatives, including a green roof and displacement ventilation. The school has achieve LEED® Silver certification.
