This two-storey multi-use facility was partially funded through the Government of Canada’s Knowledge Infrastructure Program, the Ontario Government, and Loyalist College’s student government. Built to accommodate 250 full-time students, this new building houses leading-edge programs in manufacturing, skilled trades, biotechnology and environmental sciences.
The building consists of 20 teaching laboratories and shops, three research labs, six classrooms, admin offices, and storage areas. Of particular note, the shops were designed in a 2-storey high bay format, each with its own large roll-up door around the back of the building, to provide direct exterior access to move automobiles and heavy equipment in and out with ease.
To serve common needs between programs, spaces such as the industrial maintenance, welding and machine shops, were aligned so an overhead crane could be shared. A central tool crib was also made accessible through various classrooms.
To promote social interaction and link this new building with an adjacent one, a student lounge with a beautiful, living green wall was integrated to bring students together and provide efficient traffic flow.
The building is LEED® Silver certified.
